Raquel Allegra Pre-Fall 2018

As wildfires spread across Southern California, it felt poignant that Raquel Allegra’s Pre-Fall collection was a reflection on the elements that surround us. Allegra makes her home in Topanga Canyon, and she pulled from the earthen shades of the landscape and the cerulean blue of the Pacific beyond it..... “This collection was intended to be a palate cleanser, an honest reflection of the natural world around us: the earth, the sky,

the ocean, and, always our home, California,” Allegra said.  The designer’s signature tie-dyes appeared more color-blocked this time around; Allegra used new techniques that left the impression of shorelines as one color turned to another. An allover-marble tie-dye was also new this season; it created hypnotic patterns on linen, French terry, and an ultrasoft sueded baby jersey. Allegra carried over a ruching detail from a previous collection, lending new shape and figure flattery to lightweight-gauze silhouettes. Most noticeable was the embrace of poplin; the tightly woven cotton imparted unexpected proportions and volume to the mix. Her usual repertoire of fluid layers and flounce was offset by more defined details, such as cinched waists and gathered, puffed sleeves that fell softly off the shoulder. Overall, the collection felt fresh while still familiar and a steady step in the right direction for the designer.
